DHARAMSHALA, Dec. 29: The executive body of the exile Tibetan government, known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration announced on Friday that the Minister for Religion and Culture Ven. Karma Gelek Yuthok will take charge of the Department of Education portfolio as well.

A circular issued by the Kashag (Cabinet) said that Yuthok will take “additional charge” to oversee the education department which was previously helmed by the now North America envoy of the Office of Tibet, Ngodup Tsering.

“Since Kalon Ngodup Tsering has been appointed the Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the Office of Tibet, North America based in Washington DC, he will relieve his responsibilities as Kalon of Education Department from 1 January 2018. In his place, Ven Karma Gelek Yuthok, Kalon of the Department of Religion and Culture, will take additional charge of Department of Education,” the CTA run Tibet.net stated.

On November 7 this year, the Kashag announced that the then Education Minister Ngodup Tsering will replace the former NA envoy Penpa Tsering and cited insubordination, trust and performance deficit as reasons for his termination.

The contentious decision by the Dr. Lobsang Sangay led Kashag became a much speculated and debated issue in the Tibetan diaspora. There had been incidents of protests by Tibetans both abroad and here in Dharamshala, at the seat of the exile Tibetan polity asking for an independent probe committee to look into the matter.

While the CTA leadership maintained that their decision was neither unprecedented nor illegal, the former NA representative Penpa Tsering has denied the all the charges levied against him and said that the Kashag’s accusations were “false and manipulative”.
