Xi unveils new politburo leaders without apparent heir/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, Oct. 25: Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled the new members of the communist party’s highest rung of leadership, the politburo standing committee. The 7 member standing committee was introduced to the world at Beijing’s great hall of the people on Wednesday.

Xi Jinping’s selection of the new standing committee was at the center of many political speculations months ago and more so ever since the 19th National Congress began a week ago. Five new members, Li Zhanshu, Wang Yang, Wang Huning, Zhao Leji and Han Zheng have been inducted into the group that retained Xi himself and China’s Premier Li Keqiang. All the new members have worked with Xi earlier in different capacities over the years.

“Over the past five years, we’ve done a lot. Some work has been finished, some we must continue with. A new era needs a new look, and even more needs new accomplishments,” Xi said at the carefully choreographed function.

The age of the new members, the youngest of which is 60, many say is indicative of Xi’s intent to retain power somehow after the regulated maximum of two terms of 5 years each, which finishes in 2022. The practice of naming an heir, who is usually included in the standing committee, is broken by Xi with the new members.

Chairman of the 21st Century China Center at the University of California, San Diego, Susan L. Shirk told New York Times, “If Xi goes for broke and breaks precedent by not preparing for an orderly and peaceful succession, he is putting a target on his back and risking a backlash from other ambitious politicians. By taking such a risk, he shows himself to be more like Mao than we originally thought — he demonstrates his power by overturning institutions.”

Experts and China observers second the view and say that Xi has already achieved a level of cult that had not been seen since Moa Zedong. He has elevated his name and ideology into the party’s constitution and school textbooks, and has spent most of his first term consolidating power and adding titles while purging political rivals through his flagship drive against graft.
