DHARAMSHALA, Dec. 11: Tibetans in United States of America on Sunday held a mass solidarity rally in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York City on the worlds Human rights day. A few thousand Tibetans from various parts of the US participated in the ‘solidarity with Tibet rally for peace and non-violence’.

The rally participated by a few thousand Tibetans was organized by a committee chaired by Pema Chagzoetansg and Tsewang Rigzin, the two members of the Tibetan Parliament representing North America, and was part of the ‘Year of Campaign’ declared by the Kashag on 10 March this year, Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) run Tibet.net said. The Office of Tibet Washington, an office under the exile Tibetan government, has also been amongst the key organizers of the rally.

Protesters carried coffins draped in the Tibetan flag symbolizing the staggering 150 Tibetans who have self immolated for Tibet while shouting slogans calling for support from the United Nations as well as the International community.

Tibetan President Dr. Lobsang Sangay, in his address, said that the UN must consider the suffering of the Tibetan people for the last seven decades at par with any other atrocities in the world where they have sought to lend their voice to.

“Next year marks the 70th year since the Universal declaration of human rights was made. But where is our human rights? Where is our basic freedom? That’s why we are here today in front of the UN headquarters to tell the UN and the international community about what is going on inside Tibet for the last sixty years,” he said.

“For the last six decades, Tibet has been suffering under a brutal occupation. And that is unacceptable. Tibetans are suffering and they are saying it’s unbearable. They are burning themselves; not just one or ten or twenty, but one hundred and fifty Tibetans have burned themselves asking for basic freedom and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet,” Prez Sangay further said.

Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, new North America envoy Ngodup Tsering, Prof Raj Mohan Gandhi, Chinese scholars, activists and dissidents including Prof Ming Xia, Hu PingWang, Wang Juntao, Li Weidong, Chen Pokong, Dr Yang Jingli and Xiang Xiaoji, Chen Guangchen took part in the rally.
