Tibetans hold massive protest in Delhi to mark 60th anniversary of uprising/ENG

As Tibetans mark 60 years of Chinese occupation of Tibet, around 1,000 members of the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) from all over India protested in India’s capital Delhi to voice their demand for China to end the Chinese rule in Tibet. 150 youths stormed the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi, and all were detained by security officials.

China doesn’t show any sign of thawing to Tibetan demands for freedom and autonomy in Tibet, while Tibetans continue with their resistance both inside and outside Tibet to the Chinese rule. Tibetans say six million Tibetans are in Tibet in an area of 2.5 million sq km, and 150,000 are in exile, mostly in India, and now in the US and European countries.

Tibet’s spiritual and temporal leader the Dalai Lama fled to India after the occupation, and set up his exile headquarters in McLeod Ganj in northern India. He relinquished his political powers in 2011 to an elected leader, who continues to rally for autonomy for Tibet, as proposed by the Dalai Lama.

During the stalemate, more than 150 Tibetans set themselves on fire in Tibet asking China to allow the return of the Dalai Lama, and freedom in Tibet.

The members of the TYC have been in Delhi for a three-day event since 10 March, the day commemorating the 1959 Tibetan revolt against the Chinese invasion. They organised a massive demonstration, walking for three kilometres shouting pro-Tibetan independence slogans.

A massive protest was held in front of the United Nations office the next day seeking freedom and justice for the Tibetan people.

Members protesting at the Chinese embassy were arrested and taken to a detention centre, but were released in the evening.

TYC President Tenzing Jigme has stated that “the Chinese Government is directly responsible for the self-immolations of the Tibetans in Tibet. The Chinese leaders must be accountable to the world community.”

“We pledge to continue resisting for a Free Tibet. Chinese Government has imprisoned thousands of Tibetans since the occupation of Tibet and the situation continues to remain grim. We will not give up until Tibet is free,” he continued.

The Tibetan Youth Congress is the largest Tibetan organisation in exile with over 80 chapters and 35,000 members worldwide working for an independent Tibet.
