DHARAMSHALA, SEPT 11: Tibetan writer and poet, Bhuchung D Sonam, is taking part in Asia Meets Asia (AMA) 2019 that is being held in Tokyo this month. “The subject matter of this year’s Asia Meets Asia is the state of ‘refugees’ around the world , which is explored through a performance called Drifters: Unbearable Dreams 11,” Bhuchung told Phayul over the phone.

AMA-2019 is a nine-city theatre collaboration project that includes artists from many countries, including South Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, China and Japan.

The Japanese theatre director, Hiroshi Ohashi, had been directing AMA for over two decades and is known for his unconventional style where the performance creates an ambience similar to that of street theatre but deals with urgent and pressing global issues.

“The two-hour performance will display the challenges of exiles through Tibetan and Rohingya refugee experiences as well as that of on-going Hong Kong protests. Twelve artists from nine cities have collaborated by bringing many different motifs, which are then composed into a theatre piece,” said Bhuchung.

Drifters: Unbearable Dreams 11 will feature poetry by Bhuchung D Sonam and also Tibetan music, including JJI-Exile Brother’s song titled "If".

The public performances are scheduled to take place 12-14 September. The AMA-2019 production is supported by the Japanese Arts Council with special inputs from Burmese Rohingya Association in Japan.
