Tibet’s party boss calls for tighter control over internet and mobile phones/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, February 17: The Communist Party chief of the so-called Tibet Autonomous Region has called for tighter real-name registration requirements for internet and mobile phone usage, and greater supervision of internet.

In a statement issued by his office Wednesday, Chen Quanguo said these measures would help ensure the "absolute security of Tibet's ideology and culture."

Chen, who was appointed to the post in August last, called for “comprehensive development of Tibet's services sector,” which entails providing television access to households and temple across the region.

Such a move, according to Chen, would allow the “party line and policy” to be “effectively transmitted” to tens of thousands of households into the hearts of the people of various ethnicities, as well as the “patriotic and pious monks and nuns".

In order to be better equipped ideologically to fight against the "Dalai Clique" and other forces that seek to "subvert” China in the name of "human rights, democracy, religion, and environmental protection," Chen urged his officials to study Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory and the Three Represents.

Since he took reigns of leadership in Lhasa, Chen has employed a number of propaganda as well as grass root tactics aimed at infiltrating as well as suppressing the traditional Tibetan lifestyle with communist ideology.

In November last, Chen deployed 20,000 Chinese officials in Tibetan villages to “espouse patriotism and love for China” and “re-sculpture the minds of Tibetans”.

Less than a month ago, Chen distributed over a million Chinese national flags and posters depicting the four generations of China’s top leadership to monasteries, schools, offices, and rural households for mandatory display.

Following the fiery wave of self-immolations and mass protests in other areas of Tibet, Chen recently stepped up security throughout the region while issuing strict warnings to his officials against dereliction of duty and deserting their positions.

Tibet has already been cut-off from outside world with Beijing announcing a ban on all travelers to the region beginning mid-February through March.
