DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 14: Noted Tibetan film director and screenwriter Pema Tseden’s film Jinpa won the 25th Cyclo d’Or (Golden Rickshaw) award at the Fica, Festival International des Cinémas d'Asie, reported RFI (Radio France Internationale).

Jinpa, a mystery story with a philosophical thrust won a total of three of this year's 12 awards. It also won the INALCO's Special Award and Critics' Award.

The international jury at Fica was led by Singaporean Eric Khoo, Bae Chang-ho from South Korea, Palestinian Rashid Masharawi, and Kazakh Darezhan Omirbaev. The jury said it chose Jinpa out of eight films in the feature fiction for its original style and cinematic language.

Jinpa’s screenplay was based on two novels, The Slayer by Tsering Norbu and his own I Ran Over a Sheep. It earlier won Best Screenplay in the Horizons section at the 75th edition of the Venice Film Festival in Italy in 2018.

Khoo told RFI that whether it’s a film or any piece of art, what matters is whether it “speaks” to him to not which is a direct thing. “You can judge a film for different merits; its form, tone, it’s also subjective. It is more about the character and what the film has to say.”

Pema Tseden was born into a pastoral family in Chika during the Cultural Revolution. He graduated from Northwest University for Nationalities, where he majored in Tibetan Language and Literature. He was also the first-ever Tibetan student who pursued advanced studies at China's most prestigious film school, Beijing Film Academy.

Jinpa was his ninth film that also won the Best Screenplay in the Horizon section at the 75th Venice International Film Festival in 2018. His previous films have won similar accolades and awards.
