His Holiness arrives in San Diego for programs with three Universities/ENG

2012. április 18./CTA/TibetPress

SAN DIEGO: His Holiness the Dalai Lama left Honolulu on April 17, 2012 morning arriving in San Diego the same evening.  He was received by San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, officials of the University of California San Diego, University of San Diego, and San Diego State University, which are hosting his programs. At the hotel, members of the small Tibetan community in San Diego and others welcomed him.

His Holiness begins his programs in San Diego on April 18, 2012. He will participate in a panel discussion on Climate Change: Balance Through Universal Responsibility, Compassion and Human Consciousness in the morning. In the afternoon, he will give a public talk on Cultivating Peace and Justice.

In preparation for the visit, heads of the three universities issued messages on their expectation from His Holiness’ events. Dr. Marye Anne Fox, Chancellor of UC San Diego, said, “At a time when humanity faces great environmental and economic challenges, the Dalai Lama’s message of compassion and his promotion of humanitarian values are especially important.”

Dr. Mary E. Lyons, President of University of San Diego, said, “We are grateful to His Holiness for joining us and humbled to have him with us to share his wisdom and compassion.”

Dr. Elliot Hirshman, President of San Diego State University, said, “ We are happy to provide a forum for His Holiness to share his messages of compassion and harmony. We expect these discussions will have a positive impact on the San Diego community, as well as the larger, global society.”

Following are the full text of their messages:

Message from Marye Anne Fox, PhD, Chancellor
University of California, San Diego

UC San Diego is very fortunate to have the opportunity to host His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for his first public visit in San Diego. At a time when humanity faces great environmental and economic challenges, the Dalai Lama’s message of compassion and his promotion of humanitarian values are especially important. I am grateful for the strong relationship we have with our sister universities, San Diego State University and the University of San Diego, and the positive impact His Holiness’ visit will have on our students and our community.

Message from Mary E. Lyons, PhD, President
University of San Diego

The University of San Diego is pleased to welcome His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to San Diego for his first public talks in our region. Along with our colleagues from San Diego State University and UC San Diego, we have planned two days of thought-provoking conversations with His Holiness to address critical issues facing our region, and our global society. The “Compassion Without Borders” symposium will provide several stimulating forums to inspire new discoveries and expand our understanding of humanity. We are grateful to His Holiness for joining us and humbled to have him with us to share his wisdom and compassion.

Message from Elliot Hirshman, PhD, President
San Diego State University

San Diego State University is honored to host the public lecture by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. We are happy to provide a forum for His Holiness to share his messages of compassion and harmony. We expect these discussions will have a positive impact on the San Diego community, as well as the larger, global society. We are proud to join our sister universities – University of San Diego and UC San Diego – in hosting His Holiness.
