DHARAMSHALA, October 29: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, during a private audience this morning for the teachers and students of Berotsana Tibet Cultural Preservation Center from Gangtok, Sikkim, urged them to take their share of responsibility in the global environmental preservation effort by preserving the forests and rivers as inhabitants of the Himalayan region.

After speaking about Buddha’s teaching and the need to become 21stCentury Buddhists who study and analyze the Buddha’s teaching, instead of being driven by faith, His Holiness made a special request for the preservation of the environment in the Himalayas.

Citing the recent California wildfire, His Holiness said that there would be no Buddha Dharma if humanity succumbs to the damage being caused to the environment.

“I was entrusted with the responsibility by an Indian scholar who said whenever I visit the Himalayan region, I must dissuade them from deforestation and environmental exploitation.”

His Holiness added that the big thriving democratic country of India has its major rivers coming from Tibet through the Himalayas. “So the wealth of forests in the region must be maintained well to protect the flow of the rivers.”

His Holiness applauded the group for their effort in studying Buddhism and encouraged the group to continue its work.

Berotsana center was founded by the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (RTYC), Gangtok and conducts classes on Buddhist study and activities for the preservation of Tibetan culture.
