DHARAMSHALA, December 29: Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama today arrived at the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS) in Sarnath, Varanasi to a traditional welcome by the staff and students of the Institution.

Before heading to Bodhgaya, the Tibetan spiritual leader is scheduled to attend an International Conference on 'Mind in Indian Philosophical Thoughts and Modern Sciences' at the institution. The two-day conference is on December 30 and 31.

The 82-year-old spiritual leader will celebrate the New Year’s Day at CIHTS by gracing the 50th Founding Anniversary of the institute, which will also be attended by Central Tibetan Administration’s President Dr. Lobsang Sangay and the Speaker of Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Khenpo Sonam Tenphel.

The Tibetan spiritual leader yesterday was awarded the Syedna Qutbuddin Harmony Prize during an inter-religious conference at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.

Organized by the Qutbi Jubilee Scholarship Program and the Centre of Arabic and African Studies of JNU, the meeting titled ‘Ideas of Harmonious Coexistence: Religious & Philosophies of India’ was attended by Syedna Taher Fakhruddin Saheb, Shri Gaurgopal Das and Acharya Lokesh Muni.

“All religious traditions have the potential to produce warm-hearted people, but unless we are sincere, it’s all too easy for religion to be further grounds for thinking in terms of ‘us’ and ‘them’, the Dalai Lama said the inaugural session of the conference.

The octogenarian leader also stated the audience about the importance of cultivating emotional hygiene along with physical hygiene to achieve peace of mind.

“As social animals we need friends, but we don’t make friends through fear and anger. It’s by showing genuine concern for others’ wellbeing that we earn their trust and trust is the basis for friendship,” he said, “Women spend time and effort on cosmetics to make themselves look more beautiful, but more important still is the cultivation of inner beauty — of being able to smile and show trust and concern for others.”

His Holiness has often expressed his admiration towards the concept of European Union and at the conference he again stated that concept as the best example of ‘acknowledging the oneness of humanity’.
