The 1st International Conference on ‘Building Freedom, Democracy and Peace in Asia’ was held from 11 to 12 May at the India International Centre in New Delhi, India. The conference was organised by the Tibetan Youth Congress.

It brought together social activists, civil society organisations, youth leaders, journalists, and scholars to discuss strategies to promote and build freedom and democracy in the Asian region, based on universal values of human rights.

The Chief Guest for the event was Shri Ashok Sajjanhar, and speakers included Namrata Hasija from the Centre for China Analysis and Strategy, Dr Lobsang Yangtso from International Tibet Network, and members from countries including Hong Kong, India, Japan, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Southern Mongolia, Taiwan, Thailand, Tibet, and Vietnam.

President of Tibetan Youth Congress Tenzing Jigme said, “This is a good first step. The concern regarding China’s expansionist polices are real and all the participants recognized the need for us to work together in order to overcome the challenges we face. The hope is to build upon the ideas and strategies laid out during the conference to ensure that rights of all people are respected.”

Conference sessions and speakers highlighted challenges faced by groups, best practices in addressing them, and ideas for promoting change within society.

At the sessions there was a consensus that universal human rights and freedom are in danger across Asia. The delegates strongly condemned destructive policies and oppressive regimes.

The delegates noted that this year is the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and also the 25th anniversary of the Vienna Conference on Human Rights, emphasizing the links between freedom, human rights, and democracy.
