DHARAMSHALA, Oct. 10: A Tibetan youth has won the top singing reality show of China, making him the second Tibetan to win ‘Sing! China’. Tenzin Nyima was declared the winner of the third season of the ‘Sing! China,’ popular Chinese singing talent show in Beijing last week. The Tibetan man who works as a teacher hails from Malho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in occupied Tibet’s eastern most region.

Nyima who performed a cover of a song by Inner Mongolian folk act Erguna Band
during the finale of the show at the iconic ‘Birds Nest’ stadium on October 7 was named the victor. He was judged the winner at the finale episode among five finalists, one of which was another Tibetan.

Nyima’s rendition of Tibetan folk songs and refreshing covers of popular Chinese songs saw him appreciated by fans and judges alike, throughout the competition that began in July. He was mentored by singer-songwriter Li Jian in the competition.

Following his win, Nyima said that he aspires to introduce the unique Tibetan music to the world and also showcase his style of music that fuses traditional Tibetan music with modern tunes.

Last year, another Tibetan, Tashi Phuntsok, a teacher from Shigatse city in Southern Tibet won the same competition.

Following the win by Nyima, many in China have pointed to contestants from ethnically minorities region winning popular mainstream competitions. Days before Nyima’s victory, a Xinjiang-born Uygur rapper Aire won ‘The Rap of China’ rap competition in Beijing.
