DHARAMSHALA, May 7: Kunchok Dolma becomes the second Tibetan American woman to win Emmy Award

By Tenzin Sangmo

DHARAMSHALA, May 7: Kunchok Dolma, who won an Emmy at the

62nd annual New York Emmy Award for Best Informational/Instructional Film for the TV series “Rolando’s Rights” along with her team from WeSpeak NYC becomes the second Tibetan-American woman to win the prestigious award in the last few years.

Kunchok, an Oxford graduate in International Relations and a current law student at the University of Virginia is the Creator and the Supervising Producer of the series.
Saying “For all of the adult education educators doing incredible work with limited resources,” Kunchok celebrated the 3.2 million immigrant New Yorkers for “making America great again, and again and again.”

Wearing a chupa, the traditional Tibetan attire, she shouted Bhod Gyalo after her remarks, much to the delight of the Tibetan community across the world. The Tibetan phrase which translates to Victory for Tibet is an often raised slogan to symbolize Tibetan freedom struggle.

Videos of WeSpeak NYC, an initiative of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) tell the stories of New Yorkers who have come from all over the world to make New York City their home. The show helps English language learners improve their language skills, learn about their rights and access to City services.

The season two of the series features a video called “Sonam’s Mom,” portraying the story of the Tibetan immigrant community.

Kunchok immigrated to the US from India in 2005.

An Emmy Award is an American award that recognizes excellence in the television industry.
The New York Emmy Award is presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). The New York chapter is one of the regional awards which are presented throughout the country at various times through the year, recognizing excellence in local and statewide television.

The Primetime Emmy Awards and the Daytime Emmy Awards, the two events that receive the most media coverage recognize outstanding work in American primetime and daytime entertainment programming, respectively.

New York-based Tenzin Wangmo Shakya won an Emmy at the Daytime Emmy Awards 2016-2017 as a Producer at Good Morning America, a TV show aired on ABC Network.

The Columbia University Journalism Graduate is hailed as the first Tibetan ever to win this prestigious TV award.
