China disrupts WhatsApp service ahead of 19th National Congress/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, September 27: In yet another step to ensure smooth running of the upcoming top party meeting next month in Beijing, China has disrupted the service of the messaging app WhatsApp, reported the BBC.

The only product of Facebook allowed in Mainland China has been facing disruption in service and ‘completely blocked’ on occasions. The users have been facing this problem for more than a week and were accessing only through virtual private networks (VPNs).

“The run-up period to a gathering is normally a time of greater restrictions of all kinds to assure that the critical Party Congress is held under ideal social conditions and is not disrupted", Robert Lawrence Kuhn, long-time advisor to Chinese leaders told the BBC.

This is not the first time the messaging service has gone through such restriction. Earlier in July restrictions were imposed on WhatsApp video chats and photographs, which was later lifted.

According to few tests after the latest curb, it shows that users in China cannot send video messages and pictures outside China. Moreover, analyses also show that China has started to block VPNs as well.

Coming with end-to-end encryption, the messaging service ensures privacy with regards to the content of the message. Hence Bill Taylor-Mountford, Asia Pacific VP for LogRhythm said, “China has shown little tolerance to encryption especially on platforms that can be used to share materials or potential propaganda.”

Following the travel ban in the so-called Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) for domestic and foreign travellers, and warning Tibetan monasteries against accessing social media to view or spread ‘illegal content’, the restriction is another device employed to avoid any disruption during the top party meeting during which Chinese President is expected to consolidate his power.
