DHARAMSHALA, May 8: The Chinese embassy in Lithuania has come out with a condemnation of the President of the exile Tibetan government, known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration, Dr. Lobsang Sangay’s visit and press conference at the Lithuanian parliament in its capital Vilnius.

Sangay’s press conference on Tuesday at the Seimas organized by Andrius Navickas MP, chair of the Provisional Group for Solidarity with Tibetans in the Lithuanian parliament drew strong criticism from the Chinese embassy there.

In addition to calling the visit by the Tibetan President as a ‘serious political incident’, the embassy in its scathing press release also warned any other organisation against hosting the head of the Tibetan polity.

While urging solidarity with the Tibetan movement as well as support for the Tibetan government in exile Dr. Sangay said, “If you are for freedom, for human rights, for democracy, then you must support Tibet”.

Responding to the rebuke from China, CTA spokesperson Sonam Dagpo said, “Central Tibetan Administration is appalled by the protest from Chinese Embassy in Lithuania against President Lobsang Sangay’s visit to Lithuania.

“The world knows that China occupied and invaded Tibet and Tibetans do not enjoy religious freedom, human right, right to one’s own language, etc. in Tibet.”

President Sangay visited Lithuania on 6 May to call on wider international community and Lithuania in particular to extend support for Tibet. The President talked about the prevailing situation inside Tibet at the conference in Seimas which was organised by a Tibet support group headed by MP Andrius Navickas of parliament of Lithuania, the CTA run Tibet.net reported.

The Harvard-educated Tibetan leader is on a week-long visit to the Baltic region, including Latvia, where the 7th World Parliamentarians’ Convention on Tibet (WPCT) is underway 7-10 May.
