Tougher security norms for meeting the Dalai Lama, says India’s Ministry of Home Affairs/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, June 8: Following an official advisory from the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi, meeting and having an audience with the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama is set to get tougher with security norms toughened. Sources say that authorities have been asked to place revised emphasized on verification of documents submitted by devotees and admirers who seek to meet the Tibetan leader.

The 82-year old has been living in town of Dharamshala in India’s northern state of Himachal Pradesh for more than five decades. Due to mass massive followership, audience requests to his private office here in McLeod Ganj have to be applied months in advance to meet the Tibetan leader.

Superintendent of Police, Kangra, Santosh Patial, has confirmed on receiving an advisory from the Ministry of Home Affairs and that the same has been forwarded to the concerned police unit that oversees protection of the Tibetan leader.

Sources cited by The Tribune in a report published on June 7 say that the advisory has asked to verify documentations of devotees and worshippers from Tibet that come through Nepal. The same report also says that Tibetans who do not possess proper documents or unverified documents, will henceforth will not be allowed to meet the Dalai Lama.

The octogenarian Tibetan leader is accorded the Z-plus security, one of the highest security detail by the Indian government wherever he travels in the country and exempted from frisking at the gate at all airports.

Here in Dharamshala where the Tibetan leader has been living for over four decades, the security around his residence on the hillock in McLeod Ganj, a comprehensive security detail of highly-trained Tibetan security guards in the inner cordon, and around 100 Himachal Police personnel around that are deployed.
