DHARAMSHALA, March 9: International rights watchdog, Human Rights Watch, (HRW) said that China should allow UN experts into Tibetan areas to ‘document alleged rights violations and report publicly on possible accountability measures’.

Calling the UN to assess the repression of Tibetan prisoners of conscience, Sophie Richardson, China Director at HRW, said, “The harsh sentences handed down to peaceful Tibetan dissidents fly in the face of Chinese government claims to merely be enforcing the law.

“China should invite UN rights experts to assess the imprisonment of Tibetans denied access to family and counsel, mistreated in custody and unjustly convicted.”

The New-York based rights group also expressed concerns over the difficulty of conducting proper assessment of how many Tibetans are, or have been, imprisoned in recent years for dissenting views.

HRW said there is tight restriction to learn the details of their cases or information about their sentences and that people who report such information abroad are themselves at risk of arrest.

The rights group also pointed out that political prisoners in Tibet follow a pattern of ‘arbitrary and incommunicado detention, followed by closed trials resulting in long sentences’.

HRW said, “Chinese authorities should cease prosecuting people for peaceful dissent, including under abusive charges such as ‘endangering state security’ and ‘separatism’.

Stating the continued deterioration of rights situation in Tibet as a result of China denying Tibetans their right to exercise their basic rights, Richardson said, “China could show the world they are serious about addressing these rampant abuses by admitting UN rights experts into Tibetan areas.”

The international human rights group also produced a list of 30 Tibetan political prisoners since June 2016 to February 2018.
