DHARAMSHALA, Aug. 21: The head of the Tibetan polity Dr. Lobsang Sangay said there is a dearth of quality research papers by Tibetan researchers in academic publications and mainstream periodic world over. The President of the Central Tibetan Administration was speaking at the ‘4th Young Tibetan Research Scholars’ Conference’ at the Administrative Training & Welfare Society compound here.

The Harvard educated leader said that Tibetan researchers must put up a front to counter the Chinese narrative in the international foray and that Tibetans have the advantage of truth on their side. He said that there is a lack of research papers or research on key issues that concern China such as the ambitious ‘One Belt One Road’ (OBOR) project and Chinese market economy status which has huge potential to propel China’s standing in the world in the days to come.

A former researcher himself, Sangay said that his administration will continue to provide assistance and encourage the research community in the diaspora by funding researchers attend conferences and providing platforms for them to ideate and build networks.

A participant of the conference, Dr. Jigme Yeshi who is an Assistant Professor teaching Political Science at the Calcutta University, told Phayul that despite growing number of researchers in the Tibetan community, there is a need for more researchers and scholars.

Dr. Yeshi who has a presentation on research methodology at the conference said, “I believe that the acumen for research needs to be developed at the school level so that the culture for specialty and professional studies can find its footing firmly moving forward in the Tibetan community.”

The conference organized by the Tibet Policy Institute, a think-tank under the CTA is an annual platform for young Tibetan researchers to discuss and exchange research findings on range of issues such as Tibetans in Exile, International relations, Education and language, history, environment and Chinese leadership and Governance in Tibet among other things.

The fourth edition of the conference is participated by 60 research scholars from across India who will present 32 research papers on various topics during the four-day meet.
