Tibetans from Northeast India and NGOs offer Tenshug to Dalai Lama/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, Sep. 3: Exile Tibetans settled in Northeast India’s Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Gangtok and Ravangla region along with some non-governmental organizations such as Utsang and Domed associations and Chushi Gangdruk offered Tenshug (long life prayer) to Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama here today at the Thekchen Choling Tsuglakhang temple.

Tibetans dressed in their finery gathered with offerings during the religious ceremony to the aging Tibetan leader who affirmed yet again to live beyond the age of hundred to the delight of those present at the congregation.

The Dalai Lama said, “Although my life is devoted to the benefit for beings on this earth, as a Tibetan, I am fated to be in service of Tibet. As all of you have hoped and prayed for my health and long life, I shall live beyond the age of 100 years. There is a good possibility for that to happen and I shall pray that it happens.”

The octogenarian leader also said that he is motivated to live more and do his best in helping the afflicted and deprived in this world and that his followers should also put their best foot forward in making the world a better place. “I can say I will live beyond the age of 100 but I cannot say that I will not age. It is the law of nature,” the Tibetan leader said laughing.

The Tibetan leader who recently turned 83 urged Tibetans to preserve and learn their language which holds the last surviving repository of Buddhist knowledge and wisdom which has huge potential to benefit the world.

Many including the Chinese government have likened the survival of the Tibetan freedom struggle with the age of the Dalai Lama. However. the Tibetan leader said that the Tibetan movement is associated with the fate of a people and a nation, and so the fight for a peaceful resolution will remain with or without him in it. The Dalai Lama has voluntarily devolved from political leadership in 2011 for a democratically elected leadership for the Tibetan people.

The threat of politicization of the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation by China has been recognized by the International community. In April 2018, the United States Senate passed a resolution that supported the right of the Tibetan Buddhists to hold authority over the reincarnation process of spiritual leaders, including the Dalai Lama as opposed to the heavy-handedness of the communist Beijing government.
