Tibetan trader loses shop in devastating fire in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 30: A Tibetan household was one of the victims affected by the fire that destroyed a whole market in Arunachal Pradesh’s Dirang town in West Kameng district, on Saturday afternoon.

Settlement Officer of Tenzigang and Bomdila Tibetan settlements Yangdup told Phayul that he can confirm of one Tibetan household as of now. He said, “There are no Tibetan settlements in Dirang but Tibetans venture there for their livelihood. As of now, I know of one Tibetan family who has lost shop and its content in that fire.”

Reports estimate that around 45 shops and houses were destroyed in the fire while properties and its contents worth lakhs were destroyed in the fire.

“The devastating fire spread on both sides of the narrow road, claiming several shops and houses in a span of one hour,” CO Koj Yabiyang told Arunachal Times.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju, MP from Arunachal Pradesh, said personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Sashastra Seema Bal, local police and locals were instrumental in dousing the flames and prevented the destruction of more properties there.

No casualties have been reported although loss in property and stocks in shops were considerable, sources said.
