DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 1: A Tibetan nun and former political prisoner who had served seven years in Chinese prison has reportedly died of ailments developed during her incarceration, Radio Free Asia reported.

Ngawang Tsomo, 51, died on Jan. 27 in Phenpo Lhundrub county in the Tibet Autonomous Region’s Lhasa prefecture after prolonged illness that deteriorated since last year.

“She had developed an acute headache while she was in prison and, after her release, she was unable to seek proper medication for her failing health. As her condition recently became serious, she was taken to the hospital in Phenpo Lhundrub, but she passed away in the corridor of the building while waiting to receive treatment,” a source inside Tibet told RFA on condition of anonymity.

Ngawang Tsomo was arrested for taking part in a peaceful protest with a group of people calling for Chinese colonial rule to end in Tibet, in Lhasa in 1993. Like many Tibetan political prisoners, she was sentenced to a lengthy sentence by a Chinese court without a fair trail.

The deceased also took part in the 1998 prison protest at Drapchi which resulted in the death of three prisoners after guards opened fired upon the prisoners, who refused to salute the Chinese flag and sing the Chinese national anthem.

Tsomo was released in poor health in the year 2000 with health complications that she developed due to torture and inhumane treatments in Chinese prison such as the notorious Drapchi prison, according to reports.
