DHARAMSHALA, Nov. 3: A street in Richmond city in the state of California, United States will be renamed after the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama after following its city council's voted unanimous backing on Tuesday to rename a part of Huntington Avenue to “Dalai Lama Avenue.”

The Huntington avenue between Columbia Avenue and San Joaquin Street covers an area of just a block, west of Interstate Highway 80. The city will cover the expenses of $215.38 bill for the new signs, which will be installed in the next few weeks, a day before an official ceremony for the same, Richmond Standard reported.

The request for the renaming was submitted by The Tibetan Association of Northern California (TANC), a cultural center on the block that serves as a hub for Tibetans learning their language and culture. The area which has a considerable Tibetan presence also has temple on Barrett Avenue, operated by the TANC.

Council member Eduardo Martinez said he received overwhelming response from residents of the area for the proposition. “Only one or two had no opinion, and everyone else was very strongly in favour of the name change,” Martinez told RS.

The 84-year-old Tibetan leader has a huge following in the United States and the world where he is recognised as a leader championing peace and harmony between different religion, race and nationalities. He is an honorary citizen of many countries and has been bestowed with keys to city like New York-US, Calgary-Canada and Udine-Italy, among others.
