Chinese woman disrupts ex political prisoners' commemoration of 1987 uprising/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, October 1: The commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the 1987 pro-independence movement in Lhasa through a photo exhibition by former political prisoners’ movement GuchuSum today was disrupted by a Chinese American woman.

Wen Qi Zhu, 43, violently approached GuChuSum officials after taking down pictures displayed near the temple saying that ‘these pictures (of protest and of repression on Tibetans) never happened in China’ and also called them ‘fake’. She was also seen with a scissor, with which she tried cutting the images put on display.

When Lhagyari Namgyal Dolkar, President of Gu-Chu-Sum, tried to reason with Wen, she grabbed Lhagyari by her head and shook her. Members of the organization also failed to intervene when Gyalthang Tulku Kunkhen Jamchen Choeje tired explaining her in Chinese as well.

The President of the organization for former Political Prisoner's of Tibet said that the event was organized to commemorate a significant event of historical importance in the Tibetan freedom struggle as 1987 uprising was the biggest since 1959 uprising. She added that it is to raise awareness, both Tibetans and non-Tibetans, regarding the event.

Over the unfortunate event, she said, “I never imagined anything like this to happen today since we were only displaying pictures of the 1987 uprising. However, she called them pictures fake and old and was in no state to listen to our explanation.”

She further added, “By her action today, it was clear that she came with an intend to create trouble and not to clear her doubts. Chinese do protest against such event abroad but I had never thought that I would face disagreement right under the nose of His Holiness’s abode here in Dharamshala.”

She feels that such action must be analysed in order to see where the Tibetan struggle lies. Moreover, the 43-year-old woman also assaulted a Tibetan journalist who was filming, leading to her camera being damaged.

The pro-independence movement, which begin in Lhasa in 1987 was led by 21 monks from Drepung Monastery on September 27 and was followed by monks from Sera monastery on this day 30 years ago.
