Asian man shoots at Chinese consulate in Los Angeles, kills himself/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, Aug. 3: An unidentified man reportedly shot rounds of ammunition at the Chinese consulate in Los Angeles before fatally shooting himself in his car parked just 20 meters away from the compound.

The attack occurred on Tuesday morning around 6 AM local time before the consulate’s usual opening time. Witnesses cited by local news reports claim many shots were fired, six of which hit the embassy building. The apparent attack did not injure or kill anyone, Reuters reported.

The Los Angeles Police Department found the shooter dead in his car from what they believe is a self inflicted gun wound near the chin of the deceased. Chinese state media Xinhua reported that the man whose identity is yet to be ascertained is in his 60’s and of Asian origin.

There is no information on what the motives of the deceased gunman were although sporadic media reports have suggested that he may have been protesting against China’s poor human rights record. LAPD has said that the investigation is underway.

The consulate general has urged US authorities to ensure security to the embassy and its diplomatic staff and have demanded investigators get to the bottom of the issue.

The same embassy saw a similar incident unfurl in 2011 when a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from China fired at the building with a handgun.
