DHARAMSHALA, Mar. 26: The Department of healthcare under the exile Tibetan government, known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration, on Monday announced that 80 Lakh Rupees budget has been sanctioned to revitalize the health infrastructure of the exile Tibetan diaspora in the coming year. The announcement was made earlier today on the opening day of the 6th Tibetan Health Review Meeting here.

Medical professionals and administrators from Delek Hospital, Men-Tsee-Khang, local hospitals in various Tibetan settlements, Ngoenga school, monastic institutes, Directors and members of the various local health bodies of Tibetan settlements and representatives of Central Council of Tibetan Medicine are taking part in the 2-day review meeting held in the premises of Ghangchen Kyishong.

CTA President Dr Lobsang Sangay, Health Minister Choekyong Wangchuk, personal physician to His Holiness the Dalai Lama Dr Tsewang Tamdin and Dr Tsetan Sadhutsang, Secretary Tsegyal Chukya and Director of Delek Hospital and Tibetan MP, Dawa Phunkyi were present on the opening of the meet.

“The two-day fifth health review meeting is being convened by the Department of Health, CTA to strengthen measures to improve the health care system and discuss steps to scale up awareness about prevention of diseases common in Tibetan community,” the CTA run Tibet.net said.

Dr. Sangay said that his administration is committed to tackle prevalent chronic diseases in Tibetan community and that CTA will work to eliminate TB in Tibetan schools by 2021.

Health Minister Choekyong Wangchuk said that the meet will work on formulation of draft Health Policy Paper and address the current status and prevention of Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, Throat and Esophagus Cancer, HIV Aids and Substance abuse, which are currently the most prevalent diseases in the exile Tibetan community. Wangchuk said that his department will facilitate professional growth and well-being of its medical officers and employees.

The 2-day conference will also conduct review of the reports and results of the Preventive Healthcare Committee, a group formed in April, 2016 by the Sangay led Kashag in the aftermath of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s censure over the lack of preventive measures in exile Tibetan community.
