McLeod Ganj had its first 3D film screening at the 14th edition of the Free Spirit Film Festival, which opened yesterday evening with four films at Hotel Tibet.

Tibetan Illusion Destroyer, directed by Tom Vendetti from Maui (Hawaii), is a 3D film about the Mani Rimdu Festival, held in the shadows of the highest mountains near Mount Everest. The purpose of the festival is to destroy the illusions that lead to human suffering.

Speaking to Tibet Sun, Tom Vendetti said, “I have screened my films around the world, and can say that the Free Spirit Film Festival was a wonderful experience. Lobsang and his staff created an environment that was equal to the spirit of Dharamshala.

“I was able to screen my latest film Tibetan Illusion Destroyer 3D, which was the first 3D screening in Dharamshala. It was an honor to show the film at this venue.”

The other three films screened on the first day included Infected, which shows the power of social media and how it leads to danger when you are addicted to it.

Parichay, is about a man who has lost all hope and decides to commit suicide. He changes his way of looking into life after a conversation with a stranger.

Another film, Motherland, shows the misconceptions of racism, discrimination, and prejudice, and the growth of one’s love for the motherland.

The lineup for the five-day Festival ending on 31 October consists of brand-new films from 2018 and late 2017. There will be 13 awards presented in a range of categories, announced at the end of the festival.

Except for a handful of locals, the audience mostly consisted of tourists from various parts of the world.
