“Internal matter” says India after China objects to Kashmir issue/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, Aug. 12: Days after China raised objection to New Delhi’s move to revoke the Article 370 of the Constitution that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Monday met with his counterparts in Beijing where he set to put behind the rhetoric passed by the two governments on the issue.

Jaishankar said, "The two nations should ensure that it was important that differences between us, if any, should not become disputes. Two years ago, our leaders recognised that reality and reached a consensus in Astana that at a time of global uncertainty India-China relationship should be a factor of stability."

Beijing earlier expressed objection over the matter, especially over the status of Union Territory to Ladakh, a region where its army have had many incursions over the last few years and claim to be disputed area. Earlier last week, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said in a statement: "China always opposes India's inclusion of Chinese territory in the western section of the China-India boundary under its administrative jurisdiction."

"This position is firm and consistent and has never changed. The recent unilateral revision of domestic laws by the Indian side continues to undermine China's territorial sovereignty, which is unacceptable and will not have any effect," she added.

In response, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, "India does not comment on the internal affairs of other countries and similarly expects other countries to do likewise."

The Modi-led government in anticipation of unrest and cross border militant offensive had put the restive Kashmir region into lockdown. His decision has been met with mixed response; while the opposition and residents of the Muslim majority Kashmir cried foul over the matter, others have hailed the move saying it will bring peace and usher economic development in the region that share border with Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.
