More than 10.000 show solidarity with the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans
Enthusiastic welcome for the Dalai Lama at the “Europe for Tibet” rally in Vienna

Today, Saturday, the “European Solidarity Rally for Tibet” took place at the Heldenplatz (heroes’ square) in Vienna. At the rally the Prime Minister of the Tibetan exile government Dr. Lobsang Sangay, as well as the former French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, called upon the governments of the EU member states to take action at the highest level against the deteriorating human rights situation in Tibet. The highlight of the rally was the speech of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. None of the participants understood austrian Pesident Heinz Fischer’s refusal to meet the Dalai Lama – his attitude also caused several expressions of disapproval.

The Dalai Lama thanked the Austrian people for their commitment to supporting Tibet. The organizers called the rally at the Heldenplatz a “great success” and “a strong signal of European solidarity and encouragement for the Tibetans in Tibet”.

The reason for the rally was the deteriorating human rights situation of the 6 million Tibetans in Tibet. Their living conditions have declined massively due to the repressive politics of the Chinese government and its campaign called “people’s war” since the uprising in 2008. the basic freedoms like freedom of religion, freedom of movement are brutally suppressed by the Chinese security forces. Thousands of Tibetans, who had participated in the peaceful demonstrations in the forefront of the Olympic Games, were arbitrarily arrested and tortured. The Chinese government’s tightened Tibet-politics led to a tragic escalation: 36 Tibetan women and men saw no other way of political expression than the desperate act of self-immolation.

Since China’s occupation of Tibet in 1949/1950 cultural genocide has been executed systematically: 1,2 million people have died as a direct consequence of the occupation since 1949/1950. More than 6.000 monasteries were destroyed. Not only are the political rights of the Tibetan people being suppressed, but there is also a subtle sinisization of the Tibetan people: for instance the use of the Tibetan language is gradually being abolished. Worshipping the Dalai Lama – by possession of a portrait – is punished.

Through the forced settlement of Tibetan nomads the Chinese government is destroying the millennia old Tibetan nomadic culture. Chinese immigrants, lured with economical advantages, have already outnumbered the Tibetans living in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.

The Dalai Lama was thrilled by the Austrians’ great solidarity and thanked the roughly 10.000 people, who had gathered at the well-filled Heldenplatz. The Nobel peace prize laureate emphasized in his speech, that the Tibetan freedom fight is about conservation of the culture, protection of the environment and the basic rights of the Tibetans. There is an imminent danger of extinction of the Tibetan culture and language. In these times his people desperately need the support of the west.

The former French Foreign Minujster and co-founder of Doctors without Borders, Bernard Kouchner demanded intensified pressure on China , in order to enable a delegation of the EU to travel to the Tibetan areas, including those regions where the self-immolations had taken place. Furthermore a special coordinator for Tibetan affairs should be established by the EU. This demand was supported also by other speakers, such as Madeleine Petrovic (Austrian Green Party), Eva Lichtenberger (Green Party EU-Parliament) and Bianca Jagger (international human rights advocate).

The Prime Minister of the Tibetan exile government Dr. Lobsang Sangay in particular conveyed a message to the Tibetans in Tibet: “Believe me, our day will come”. In his speech he appealed to the European politicians as well as the people, to campaign for the human rights of his people. Tibetans need their support especially at this moment. “The situation in Tibet does not allow any room for delay. My people need help now !” The Tibetans have been longing for years to be blessed by His Holiness and he believes firmly that this day will come. Then there will be democracy also in China.

There were also Tibetans from all over Europe participating in the rally, using the presence together for strengthened networking and coordination of the following political steps within the EU.
