DHARAMSHALA, Oct. 10: India’s most prominent Tibetan support group has urged the state government of Tamil Nadu to release the Tibetan students who are being held by the police prior to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Mamallapuram near Chennai for the second informal summit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Close to 35 students were detained in two separate incidents earlier this week by the police and intelligence authorities in Chennai city where there is a considerable number of Tibetan students. The police there also detained a prominent Tibetan activist Tenzin Tsundue who had a record of surprise protests against visiting Chinese leaders.

The students including activists from the Student for Free Tibet continue to be held by the police there and are likely to be detained until the summit between the Xi and Modi wraps up on Saturday.

The group released a statement on Thursday which objected to Tibetan students who have been put on house arrest, barred from attending their colleges and questioned their motives and aspiration.

“Towards this unwanted act of State Government, the Core Group for Tibetan Cause – India strongly condemns such illicit show of power and administrative machinery that crushes the common people’s voice against prevailing injustices.”

“The Core Group for Tibetan Cause – India also strongly urges the concerned State Government to release those Tibetan students or people immediately without any pre-conditions being levied upon them,” RK Khrimey, National Convener of the Core Group for Tibetan Cause-India said.

The Statement also said that over the course of the last 60 decades, successive administrations have never crushed the voices of Tibetan refugees, their protest in the street against injustices impinged upon Tibetans inside Tibet by Chinese Communist Government and imposed restrictions upon their movement.
