DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 19: The European Parliament on Thursday passed a resolution urging China to release Tibetan language activist Tashi Wangchuk, political prisoner Choekyi, while also reiterating the need to resume dialogue between His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s representative and their counterparts in Beijing.

The Brussels based EU parliament called for the immediate release of Tashi Wangchuk, a Tibetan language activist who recently tried with charges of “inciting separatism”. The EU parliament said that it, “expresses its deep concern at the arrest and continued detention of Tashi Wangchuk, as well as his limited right to counsel, the lack of evidence against him and the irregularities in the criminal investigation.”

The EU parliament also called for the immediate release of Tibetan monk Choekyi who was jailed for celebrating the birthday of exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2015. Choekyi, a monk of Phurby monastery in Serta County, serving a four-year term in Sichuan’s Mianyang prison is facing kidney complications, jaundice, and other health-related issues which is deteriorating due to inhuman prison conditions in Tibet.

The EU parliament reiterated its call on the Chinese Government to engage with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his representatives for dialogue, stating that it, “expresses its support for a peaceful resolution of the issue of Tibet through dialogue and negotiations with a view to granting Tibet genuine autonomy within the framework of the Chinese Constitution.”

The comprehensive resolution further condemned the treatment of ethnic minorities including Tibet and the persecution of their religious rights inside Tibet. “The environment for practicing Buddhism in Tibet has worsened significantly after the Tibetan protests of March 2008, with the Chinese Government adopting a more pervasive approach to ‘patriotic education’,” the resolution stated.
