The Chinese government wants to acquire some hair of the Dalai Lama, said a Tibetan activist, who claimed to have connections with some top Chinese agents inside China.

Dhamchoe Nyima is a Tibetan living in the US with a background in bio-tech research. He said that Chinese agents contacted him a few months after he publicly destroyed his tax receipt book, known as the ‘Green Book’, in December 2017. This is a document issued by the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), based in McLeod Ganj, India.

“Looks like the Chinese agents felt that I was against the Dalai Lama and the CTA after they saw the video of me destroying my Green Book.”

He said that he allowed a connection with them to develop, and he was invited to China for a meeting. He travelled to Shanghai in July 2018 where he met with some top Chinese intelligence agents. He went for a second visit in January this year, but met with different officials from a different department.

When pressed as to how he could prove the claims of “top agents”, he said that when his short-term visa was expiring before arriving in Shanghai, one “top agent” influenced the immigration officer to fix the situation and let him pass.

He then had a few meetings with them in a five-star hotel in the city, where he was asked to arrange for getting some of the Dalai Lama’s hair.

In a hurriedly-held press conference in McLeod Ganj, Nyima said that this was his exposé of some actions of the Chinese government.

“I have no idea what the Chinese want to do with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s hair, but they asked me to get close to his coterie to get some of it.”

The “agents” showed interest in the issue of choosing the next Dalai Lama, although nothing further about it was discussed. They also asked him if he had any family members living in the Himalayan region of India.

He expressed concern for Chinese designs on the region and on the appointment of the next Dalai Lama, and asked Indian officials to be wary.

Nyima said that for an exile Tibetan to be in touch with “high-level Chinese agents” is in itself something to consider, and to hear from their own mouths what they are looking for gives it even more importance.

A visit to China planned for a third time in August/September did not materialise, as Nyima wasn’t able to get a visa due to the Hong Kong situation. “My contacts were engaged with the Hong Kong issue.”

“Had I got a visa, I was planning to protest on the anniversary of China’s 70th founding anniversary. Unfortunately this didn’t materialise. Now I have decided to close this chapter with all that I know.”

Much was said in the Tibetan community about Nyima destroying his Green Book. He explained that he had destroyed an old Green Book that was not being used, in protest against some policies of the CTA. He then showed the one that he is currently holding.

“Through my research on social media, I knew that an act like destroying the Green Book would get such offers from the Chinese government. It happened exactly in the way I imagined, and I got to do what I wanted.”

He then announced a donation of 5,000 USD to the CTA. “I will hand the cheque to the Sikyong (CTA President) when I meet him sometime in the next few days.”
