US report criticizes China’s ‘state control’ of religion in report/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, August 10: The US State Department in their latest report, International Religious Freedom Report 2015, have criticized China for exercising ‘state control’ over religion and imposing restrictions on activities seen as threat to state’s interests.

“Seven Tibetans self-immolated during the year protesting the restrictive government policies, including lack of religious freedom. They often justified official interference with Tibetan Buddhist monasteries by associating them with separatism and pro-independence activities,” said the report.

The report also noted that Tibetan Buddhists in China are not ‘free to venerate the Dalai Lama openly’ and that the repression of religious freedom remained most severe in Xinjiang and in Tibetan areas.

“Chinese authorities frequently tightened security in advance of major Tibetan holidays (politically ‘sensitive’ anniversaries) and the birthday of the exiled Tibetan religious leaderthe Dalai Lama,” the State Department’s report mentioned.

The report also said the discrimination of ethnic minorities, Uighur Muslims and Tibetan Buddhists also extend towards societal discrimination in employment, housing, and business opportunities. “Religious and ethnic minority groups, such as Tibetan Buddhists and Uighur Muslims, experienced institutionalized discrimination throughout the country both because of their religious beliefs and their status as ethnic minorities with distinct languages and cultures.”

The report also heavily criticized the demolition of churches and heavy scrutiny of Christians and Muslims in China.
