Tibetan Youth Congress President Tenzing Jigme called on Tibetans to take responsibility and make sacrifices for freedom and independence for Tibet.

Jigme made the call at the organisation’s 49th annual meeting that kicked off at Dekyiling Tibetan Settlement, Dehra Dun, in northern India. The five-day meeting from the 6th has 150 delegates from 35 regional chapters from India and Nepal. Since its establishment in 1970, TYC has been holding Working Committee Meeting every year.

The opening ceremony was graced by former TYC member and former minister in the exile Tibetan administration Gyari Dolma. She had also been a member of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile.

Dolma lit a butter lamp to open the meeting, which was followed by the singing of the Tibetan and the Indian national anthems, and observing a minute’s silence for the Tibetan martyrs.

She urged Tibetans to shun regional bias, and to remain in unity among Tibetans to fight the bigger cause to free Tibet.

Applauding the efforts of the TYC, she said that TYC is one of the major organisations within the exile Tibetan community that threatens the Communist Party of China.

In the five-day meeting, the delegates will discuss strategies for strengthening the Tibetan movement, bringing about better unity in the Tibetan community, and enhancing the network among the regional chapters.

The Tibetan Youth Congress is said to be the largest Tibetan NGO in exile, with around 80 chapters around the world, working towards the freedom and independence of Tibet.
