DHARAMSHALA, Mar. 23: After the setback to exile Tibetans surrounding the cancellation of the much anticipated “thank you India” events in the national capital, another high profile event planned by the Central Tibetan Administration has been “postponed” indefinitely, in light of the freshly realigned diplomatic ties between New Delhi and Beijing.

The 7th World Parliamentarian’s Convention on Tibet, which was scheduled for April 26-28 in New Delhi has been called off amid changing Indian policy for Tibetans here in India. “The World Parliamentarians conference on Tibet has been postponed,” confirmed former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and BJP MP Shanta Kumar to The Hindu. The co-convenor of the conference did not provide any alternative dates for the event.

While the authority on the matter, the Ministry of External Affairs and the MHA, declined to formally comment on the issue, The Hindu cited an unnamed senior official who said that the cancellation came for the same reasons as the inter-faith religious ceremony at Rajghat on March 31 that was cancelled and a public rally at Delhi’s Thyagaraja stadium on April 1 that was moved to Dharamshala.

The global lawmakers’ meet was last held in India 24 years ago and last held in Canada in 2012 which was attended by over 50 parliamentarians from 30 countries.

The much talked about development on the changing Indian policy for the exile Tibetan community and chiefly the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama began on March 1, when Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha was reported to have issued a note for internal circular to all Ministries/Departments of Government of India as well as State Governments not to accept any invitation or to participate in the proposed commemorative events proposed by the CTA which the Dalai Lama was to attend, citing “tension in relation with China”. A noted China expert called the move as “course correction” with regards to stabilizing relations with China.
