DHARAMSHALA: The Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA), the premier institute of Tibetan dances and theatre, celebrated its 56th founding anniversary on 12 June. The celebration was dedicated to His Holiness the Dalai Lama in honour of his upcoming 80th birthday on 6 July.

Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay, the political leader of the Tibetan people, graced the occasion along with Mr. Kagyu Dhundup, the Chief Justice Commissioner and Mr. Penpa Tsering, Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament. Also present at the event were senior officials of the Central Tibetan Administration and members of various NGOs.

After a minute’s silence in solidarity with the self-immolators in Tibet, Mr. Wangue Tsering, the Director of TIPA, gave a brief account of the works of the institute. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude for all the financial support the institute has received from its donors so far.

“TIPA has successfully contributed great efforts to keep alive Tibet’s unique tradition of performing arts since it was re-established immediately after coming into exile by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 11 August 1959 after the Chinese invasion of Tibet,” Mr. Wangue Tsering said.

The occasion was celebrated with a musical competition between the two houses of TIPA – Ngonpa and Gyalu. The competition was judged by Mr. Kunga Tashi, Additional Secretary of the Security department of CTA, Mrs. Kalsang Choekyi, ex TIPA and Mr. Sonam Wangdue, Upper TCV Junior school headmaster.

As the result was announced, both the houses came out with the same score. The chief guest Sikyong Lobsang Sangay presented the winning trophy to both the house representatives while the runner-up trophy sat idle on the stage.

In his brief address, Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay, on behalf of the present Kashag appreciated TIPA’S efforts in creating awareness about Tibet’s rich culture across the world. He reiterated His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s tireless contribution and reminded the audience to follow his guidance.
