First self-immolations in Tibetan capital
Two Tibetans set themselves on fire in the capital city of Lhasa yesterday. The self-immolations took place in front of the iconic Jokhang Temple in the centre of the old city.

One of the men was Dorjee Tseten (right) a 19-year-old from Bhora township. Chinese state media is reporting that he died.

Chinese forces moved in quickly to remove any signs of disturbance and Lhasa is now under heavy military restrictions.



Tibetan protests
Free Tibet has already received reports that Tibetan residents of Lhasa have been arbitrarily detained, and that those from Ngaba have been especially targeted.

The owner and other staff from the restaurant where Dorjee worked were arrested last night.

Over 30 Tibetans have set themselves on fire and thousands more have participated in protests in other areas of Tibet since March 2011, but these are the first self-immolations in Tibet’s capital city.
