DHARAMSHALA, June 25: The Tibetan President Dr. Lobsang Sangay who was on a 5-day visit to Israel has said that Tibetans can take hope from the Jewish people who regained their homeland after 2000 years. Sangay helms the Dharamshala based exile Tibetan government known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration.

“We always look for hope. If the Jewish people can do it, we Tibetans should be able to do it too. There is a sobering lesson that it took them 2,000 years,” Sangay told The Jerusalem Post, adding that he wished the Tibetans regain their homeland much quicker.

“We want to see the Dalai Lama back in Tibet, back in the capital city of Tibet, the land of God. We want our living God to be back in the land of Gods. And that is the prayer. And to think how many hundreds of thousands of Tibetans have died in the last 60 years, praying, dreaming, wishing for the Dalai Lama’s return to Tibet and have not yet been fulfilled,” Sangay said.

The Tibetan President said that Israel should follow suit with their biggest ally the United States in supporting his administration’s ‘middle way approach’ to seek autonomy within the China.

The head of the Tibetan polity’s first trip to the Jewish state is organized by the Israeli Friends of the Tibetan People with meetings with civil society and visits to tourist sites and the Supreme Court.

“Next time I will make a political visit and see how many people in the government and the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) will meet or not,” Sangay said while also adding that he does not wish to comment on the Israel-Palestinian conflict although he would be happy to respond to an invitation from the Palestinian Authority.
