DHARAMSHALA, Oct. 23: One of the oldest and foremost Tibetan schools in the diaspora on Wednesday celebrated its 59th founding anniversary here paying rich tribute to its key patron, His Holiness the Dalai Lama under whose guidance and vision, the school started almost six decades ago.

The prominent Tibetan school dedicated the 2019 anniversary’s theme to the long and healthy life of the Tibetan leader who is 84 years old, urging Tibetans around the world to unite as one to further the Tibetan cause. Among the day’s programs, students displayed the trademark TCV calisthenics portraying messages that read, “Long Live His Holiness”, and “113”, the auspicious age that the Dalai Lama once said he was prophesied to live.

The Chief Guest of the ceremony was His Eminence the 34th Menri Trizin Lungtok Dawa Dhargyal Rinpoche, the spiritual leader of Bön tradition and the abbot of Menri Monastery in Dholanji. The religious figure urged the teachers of the educational institution to live by example while teaching the Tibetan students, adding that students imitate the life of a teacher and hence, the life and not the teaching becomes the ultimate lesson for the students.

Central Tibetan Administration’s President Dr. Lobsang Sangay who attended the event as a special guest lauded the accomplishments of TCV for the last few decades and likened it to be a cradle for future Tibetan generations in the diaspora. The head of the Tibetan polity said that in contrast to children across the world where 1 in 4 has no access to basic education, Tibetan students have complete access to school education and scholarships for further studies. He further said that indexes such as the literacy rate of Tibetans is considerably higher than that of native Indians or neighbouring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh. “Despite being refugees, the achievements of the Tibetan community in all respects are commendable and tangible under the blessing of His Holiness the Dalai Lama,” he added.

Top rung Tibetan leadership from the exile Tibetan government; Deputy Speaker of TPiE Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok, Chief Justice Commissioner Sonam Norbu Dagpo, Chairman of Public Service Commission and Election Commissioner Wangdu Tsering Pesur, Chief Auditor General as well as representatives of various CTA offices and NGOs attended the event held at TCV upper Dharamshala.

The TCV school was founded by the late Tsering Dolma, the sister of the Tibetan leader His His Holiness the Dalai Lama and later helmed by his other sister, Jetsun Pema. The school that had humble beginning with just 51 students in 1960 as a nursery has grown into an organization with multiple branches in India with over 16000 students under its care today.
