DHARAMSHALA MAY 30: The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has said that unity among the three traditional provinces of Tibet and among various traditions of Tibetan Buddhism is very important. "Sometimes, we see conflicts among ourselves based on our native provinces, or religious traditions, that's completely not needed. And also between people supporting Middle Way Approach and Independence. That's one's personal ideology and should not become a reason for conflict."

His Holiness said that it is too naive to think of China as an enemy in resolving the Tibet issue. “If we confront China as an enemy, it is stupid. Instead we should achieve a bond, that is between two peoples which is the only way to solve the issue,” the Tibetan leader was speaking to the participants of the first International Conference on the Middle Way Approach at the Tsuglakhang courtyard earlier today.

The Tibetan leader spoke about the achievements of the Middle Way Approach, which he said was instrumental in bridging the Tibetans inside Tibet and those in exile through visits of official delegations following resumption of ties with China during Deng Xiaoping’s tenure as President of China. “The visits enable us to know about the undying spirit of the Tibetans inside Tibet, and also to revive ties with our brethren in Tibet. If we had demanded independence, none of this could have happened,

“Deng Xiaoping was pleasantly surprised to know the developments in exile, and the accomplishments in the field of education. He even sought to invite Tibetan teachers and translators, as there was shortage of people then. However, due to their refusal to travel as Chinese on paper the project did not materialize.”

The Tibetan leader added that the Middle Way Approach has support from the international community including the EU and the US. He also said that there is a growing number of Chinese intellectuals supporting the idea of Tibet within the framework of the People’s Republic of China as an autonomous entity with its culture and religion intact.

He also said that the Tibetan Buddhism is gaining more and more popularity in the west, especially in higher educational institute. “Even scientists say that our philosophies are scientific and based on logic rather than just belief,” he said, adding that a cordial relation between China and Tibetan exiles will benefit Millions of Chinese Buddhists in China.

The Tibetan leader told the youngsters that they must learn the Tibetan language well as it is the only language that can interpret the teachings of the Buddha and the Nalanda masters. "No other language can enable us to understand the teachings except Tibetan, we can take pride that we have kept it alive."
