DHARAMSHALA, July 16: Despite angry protests demanding Tulku’s body be handed over for last rites the Chinese authorities have cremated Tulku Tenzin Delek’s body earlier this morning against the wishes of his family at a Chinese prison located 5 kms away from Chaundong Prison in Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan province.

Only the closest aides and immediate family of the deceased numbering to around 30 were allowed to see the body and perform a brief prayer. His belongings and personal effects were burned along with the body and his remains not allowed to be taken. Sources said Tulku's death was caused by poisoning. However, it could not be verified.

Geshe Nyima, Tenzin Delek Rinpoche’s student and cousin says, “I am heartbroken, but also extremely angry. My family cannot accept this. We will not stop demanding justice until we have answers. Chinese authorities denied us our right to pay our final respect to Tenzin Delek Rinpoche and refused to return his body to us for Buddhist rites. My family believes he was murdered.”

Outside the gates of the Chaundong prison, over a hundred people had sat in a peaceful ‘sit-in’ since July 14. The gathering were previously threatened that the body will be cremated electronically in secret and his remains be disposed off.

In the events leading up to the incident, 15 people were critically injured sustaining gunshot wounds after being fired upon by Chinese security forces with live ammunition rounds when a crowd of few thousand people rallied in front of the administrative building of Yuthok Township, Nyachuka County on July 13. Graphic images of the injured people are being posted on social networking sites.

The US Congress convened a hearing Wednesday where representatives and spokesperson of Department of State, International Campaign for Tibet, Office of Tibet and Human Rights Watch commemorated the departed Tulku Tenzin Delek who died under ‘mysterious circumstances’ while serving a life sentence in Chinese prison last Sunday.
