DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 30: The new head of the Nyingma tradition, the oldest tradition of the Tibetan Buddhism, Kathok Getse Rinpoche, on Saturday called on the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Bodh Gaya, prior to the latter’s departure for New Delhi.

Last week, the 5th Kathok Getse Rinpoche Gyurme Tenpa Gyaltsen, holder of the Kathok Monastery lineage, was appointed the 7th head of Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Senior Nyingmapa Lamas held a meeting on the side-lines of the recently concluded 29th Nyingma Monlam in Bodh Gaya where it was unanimously decided to appoint Kathok Getse Rinpoche and five other Nyingma lamas as the “supreme head” of Nyingma tradition on a three-year tenure basis. Nominees from six major Nyingma monasteries; Zogchen, Shechen, Mindrolling, Dorje Drak and Palyul will succeed the incumbent head of the Ngingmapa school on three-year terms later on.

The Dalai Lama’s private office reported that the new Nyingma head Lama, “offered a mandala and representations of the body, speech and mind of the enlightened one. His Holiness congratulated him, wished him very well and presented him with a statue of Guru Padmasambhava.”
