'Muted' Obama ‘appeasing’ China, say dissidents/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, September 21: With just four days left until Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives in US on state visit, Chinese dissidents rued over the absence of any response from President Obama to their appeal to “stand with the civil society” and to invite their representatives to the white house to put their resolve on the table.

“The Obama administration has been too accommodating, even appeasing, to the regimes that act like rogues and hoodlums in the international community,” said Guangdong based lawyer Liu Shihui, who was detained in 2011 and his license revoked for representing petitioners with grievances against officials.

“Almost the entire Western free world, including America, has been led by the nose by the Communist Party’s checkbook diplomacy. They’ve become weaker and weaker in defending human rights,” writes Liu chinachange.org.

Jiang Tianyong, Beijing based human rights lawyer who was detained in 2011 as well as the recent onslaught in July has echoed sentiments that have very little hope from the meet. He opines that the upcoming Xi-Obama meeting might not bear any positive results, not least on the human rights situation with the trade and financial obligations overshadowing the afore. “President Obama will more likely take on the visage of a merchant during this Xi visit, putting aside all his principles, completely neglecting the burning fact that all these human rights lawyers and human rights defenders have been “legally” secretly disappeared by the authorities”.

The Xi-Obama meet this week is weighed too heavily by issues such as state sponsored cyber attacks by China, militarization of south-China sea and trade that rights groups’ hope for a meaningful discussion on human rights issue might materialize only in a “symbolic gesture”.
