DHARAMSHALA, Aug. 6: The largest Tibetan pro-independence group, Tibetan Youth Congress, yesterday began its working committee meet at Dekyiling Tibetan Settlement in Dehradun. The 4-day meet is participated by 150 delegates representing 35 regional chapters in the Indian sub-continent.

Key mong the agendas of the 49th working committee meet, Information Secretary Tsewang Dolma told Phayul, is to bolster the organisation’s bed-rock image of activism and social service in the Tibetan community. She said the organisation is gearing up to put up the A- game ahead of the organisation’s golden jubilee in 2020.

She also said that the organisation is “deeply concerned” about the security and the well being of the Tibetan exiled leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama. “We are deeply concerned about the statement made by the Dalai Lama in Ladakh just last week on his schedule and age. The issue was discussed extensively by the delegates this afternoon,” Tsewang told Phayul.

She said that TYC is looking at providing specific workshops for its members who volunteer as security personnel at teachings and mass gatherings in the Tibetan community such as the Kalachakra teachings.

The TYC with 80 chapters worldwide remains the largest Tibetan NGO in exile. In the last few years, internal rift in the organisation affected its image with some chapters calling for a change in the organisation’s stand to seek independence for Tibet and consequently withdrew. Many say that the conflict is laid to rest with the parent office of TYC publicly taking concreate steps in declaring that member-rich chapter such as Bylakuppe as well as Hunsur and Kollegal chapters are not associated with the headquarter anymore.

Tenzing Jigme, TYC’s President reiterated on the opening day of the meet that the organisation respects the official stand of the Tibetan government in exile, the ‘Middle Way Approach’ as an alternate solution to the Tibetan issue and that the two stands can independently and peacefully strive towards achieving a solution for Tibet.
