No widespread support for Dalai Lama in Tibet: CCP Chief in occupied Tibet/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, Mar. 7: Exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has no widespread support in Tibet and that the Tibetan people there are prosperous and happy under the Chinese Communist Party’s leadership, a senior Chinese official said at a meeting on the side-lines of China's annual parliamentary meeting on Wednesday in Beijing.

Wu Yingjie, Party Chief on Tibet insisted, "Since defecting, the Dalai Lama has not done a single good thing for the Tibetan people. Tibetan people have gratitude in their hearts. They are grateful to the Communist Party for bringing them a happy life."
The remarks, many say, is along the lines of the party’s hardliners who view the Dalai Lama as a “separatist” despite his vocal stand for Tibet to be incorporated within China as prescribed in its constitution.

Wu claimed that the Tibetan people’s right including that to preserve their mother tongue is respected in Tibet. However, the persecution of Tibetan language rights activist Tashi Wangchuk and the consequent international outcry and significant media coverage on the same point to a different picture on the ground.
Beijing is known to vilify the Nobel laureate who had initiated nine rounds of talks for a political resolution of the Tibetan issue. The talks have since stalled with the two senior envoys resigning, citing lack of genuine intent from China to solve the issue.

The Dalai Lama in a bid to deescalate the troubled relations between the exile setup and Beijing said last year that he wishes to visit China for a pilgrimage to a holy Buddhist site and hold conference on Buddhist philosophy and science at universities in Beijing.

In an interview with Dutch daily De Volskrant, in September 2018, the Tibetan leader said, "I am keen to make a pilgrimage to Wutaishan. I have two conditions. Many Tibetan and Chinese Buddhists will come to meet me there, so I want to have the freedom to give a religious teaching. And I want to visit top universities in Beijing. I have been discussing emotions, psychology, the cosmos and quantum physics with scientists in India and the West for almost forty years. I want to do that in China.”

The Dalai Lama said that he has made his wish known to Chinese friends, adding that he now “waits”.

The 83-year-old Tibetan leader who has voluntarily devolved political authority to an elected leadership has said decades ago that he seeks genuine autonomy for Tibet through the ‘Middle Way Approach’. CCP has rejected the MWP which is supported by the international community’s prominent stakeholders including the United States and the European Union.
