DHARAMSHALA, June 20: Infuriated by the US President Barack Obama meeting the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama last week, China has lashed out at Washington ‘not to interfere in China’s internal matter’.
China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi, in telephonic conversation on Saturday, told the US Secretary of State John Kerry, “Tibet affairs are China's domestic affairs and no foreign country has the right to interfere.”
Kerry reiterated that there was no change in the US policy that Tibet is an part of China and that the US does not support Tibet’s independence, according to the Chinese Foreign ministry website.
In an apparent reference to Obama’s meeting with the Tibetan leader, the Chinese Foreign Minister said “such a meeting harms China-US mutual trust and cooperation.”
The Tibetan leader Dalai Lama who is reviled by China as as a “separatist” met with President Obama for the fourth time last Wednesday in eight years despite opposition from the Chinese government.
During the meeting President Obama lauded the Dalai Lama’s commitment to peace and nonviolence, and expressed support for his Middle Way approach. He also extended his support for the preservation of Tibet’s unique religious, cultural, and linguistic traditions.
The two leaders also discussed issues of human rights, environment and also the recent massacre in Orlando.
