DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 31: Prominent Tibetan religious leader and head of the Karma Kagyu lineage, Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje, on Sunday urged exile Tibetans to refrain from regionalism and divisive political affiliations and instead to work towards realizing the hopes placed on them by fellow countrymen in occupied Tibet.

The Karmapa was speaking at the Colden Auditorium at Queens College, Flushing, New York when he gave a religious empowerment to over 12,000 devotees on Jan. 28.

The Karmapa said that exile Tibetans have been increasingly giving more importance to divisive political affiliations and regionalism than the cause of Tibet. He also said that the Tibetan community in exile has shown growing tendency towards being volatile ever since the Tibetan general elections last year, referring to the Tibetan Presidential elections that many said fueled regionalist politics in the exile Tibetan diaspora.

“Tibetans in Tibet have a great hope in the fellow Tibetans in exile. When I was in Tibet, I use to feel as though exile Tibetans are always on the verge of a breakthrough; in that change may come as soon as tomorrow, just as many Tibetans inside Tibet. But coming into exile, such hopes for change seem difficult,” the Karmapa lamented.

The Tibetan lama also said that Tibetans have a great leader in His Holiness the Dalai lama and that Tibetans should try and follow what he says rather than just carry his name on the lips and portray devotion to him.

Ogyen Trinley Dorje is regarded as the true 17th Karmapa by majority of Tibetans and is endorsed by the foremost Tibetan religious figure, the Dalai Lama. Two other claimants to the throne of Karmapa has emerged over the years, leading to a messy legal ordeal.
