DHARAMSHALA, Sept. 26: The 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje has expressed concern over the proceedings of the Tibetan Parliament in exile, particularly the statements made by a Kagyu MP Tenpa Yarphel earlier during the ongoing parliamentary session.

The head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, in a statement issued on Sunday from New York, said that the “prestigious and respectable” forum is not an arena to “squabble” amongst its members.

The young Lama said, “the parliament is a platform to discuss and debate the imminent issues that concern the Tibetan struggle and its people and not where personal and factional differences are displayed. It is not good if the parliament is used as a platform for squabbling amongst its members.”

The Tibetan Lama said that he respects the ideals of democracy and free speech, yet in his capacity as a spiritual leader of the Kagyu lineage, he could not remain silent when an MP representing Kagyu constituency makes untoward statements in the parliament, without naming the MP who last week argued that the role of state oracle Nechung should be done away with.

MP Yarphel said on Sept. 20 that the exile Tibetan government is greatly overstating the importance of deities and that beseeching heavenly deities is not proper Buddhism.

The Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje further said that Tibetan legislators should advocate issues that concern the Tibetan struggle and the welfare of its people and not divisive issues based on sectarian and regional undertones.

The Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje is one of the three claimants of the title of the 17th Karmapa and the of the Rumtek monastery in Sikkim, the main monastery of the previous Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje.
