DHARAMSHALA, January 29: Freedom House, in their annual ‘Freedom in the World’ report, has placed Tibet as the second worst place in the world for political rights and civil liberties.

Preceded only by the war-torn Syria with minus 1 Tibet under the occupation of China has been given 1 on a scale of 100 which represents the best.

The US-based human rights and democracy organization gave 7 out 7 to Tibet in political rights and civil liberties with 1 being the most free and 7 the least.

According to the organization, the global freedom index declined for the 10th consecutive year in 2015, as economic pressures and fear of unrest led authoritarians to crack down on dissent, while migration and terrorism fueled xenophobia in democracies.

“The government (China) continues to pursue policies, including large-scale resettlement and work-transfer programs, that are designed in part to alter the demography of ethnic minority regions, especially Tibet, Inner Mongolia, and the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region,” the report said.

The report also showed zero participation in electoral process, political participation and political rights in the region.

The report evaluates the state of freedom in 195 countries and 15 territories during calendar year 2015. Each country and territory is assigned between 0 and 4 points on a series of 25 indicators, for an aggregate score of up to 100.

The organization also slammed China for their crackdown on human rights lawyers, journalists, and minority rights advocates in 2015.
