International youth gathering calls for global responsibility to prevent Tibet crisis/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, April 30: A global congress of the world’s largest political youth organisation has passed a resolution calling on the world community to take greater responsibility in preventing the ongoing wave of self-immolations inside Tibet.

“The world community has a responsibility to prevent the crisis from exacerbating and spiraling out of control causing further casualties,” a resolution on Tibet passed at the World Congress of International Union of Socialist Youth held in Paraguay stated.

The continuing wave of self-immolations in Tibet has witnessed 35 Tibetans set their bodies on fire, since 2009, demanding the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama from exile and freedom in Tibet. Major protests involving thousands of Tibetans in recent months have been brutally suppressed with indiscriminate firing and arrests.

The largest gathering of international socialist youths reaffirmed its “support for an independent Tibet and condemn the illegal occupation of Tibet.”

The World Congress, the highest decision-making body of IUSY, further called on China to immediately allow an international fact-finding delegation to visit Tibet to “assess the critical situation in Tibet” and to pressure China to stop the “undeclared martial law in Tibet.”

“The Tibet Resolution which was made available in three languages by the organising committee was reviewed by all members attending the congress and passed with an overwhelming majority,” Tenzin Norsang, joint secretary of the Tibetan Youth Congress, who represented Tibet at the five-day meeting from April 20-24, said.

Norsang, who was among hundreds of youth representing over 100 countries at the Congress, addressed the gathering and gave a detailed account of the current situation inside Tibet, facts on the self-immolation protests and the Chinese Communist Party’s oppressive policies.

Norsang also met with the President of the Republic of Paraguay, Fernando Lugo, who was the chief guest of the opening day ceremony and briefed him about the “dire situation” inside Tibet.

Founded in 1907, IUSY is the largest political youth organisation in the world representing socialist, social democratic and labour political youth organisations from around the world with a UN consultative status.
