DHARAMSHALA, Sep. 19: Exiled Tibetan leader and global icon for peace, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be awarded the Gandhi Global Foundation’s 2018 Gandhidarsan International Award, the organisers said.
The award comprises a purse of Rs. 3 lakh, a citation and sculpture, Gandhi Global Foundation’s president S. Vijayan said at a press conference at Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.
The 83-year old Tibetan leader who is seen as the global ambassador for peace and reconciliation is a vocal admirer of Mahatma Gandhi and his principles of Ahimsa. The Dalai Lama has also advocated non-violent resolution for his country’s political freedom since 1959.
The egalitarian Tibetan leader was awarded the Nobel peace prize in the year 1989 for his work on peace and structuring the Tibetan movement in a peaceful and non-violent way.
The Tibetan leader who is currently on a four-nation tour in Europe will conclude his schedule in Germany on Thursday and head to Switzerland to attend the 50-year anniversary of the Tibet Institute Rikon where he will give religious teachings and public talks, his office said.
